If you are looking to add some variety to your meals, you may want to consider making some Hispanic dishes that may not yet be in your recipe rotation. Hispanic food can bring great flavors and hearty ingredients to your palette.
If you’ve never made Hispanic food before, you may want to start out with arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) and enchiladas, two of the dishes Americans enjoy most. A simple enough meal to prepare, arroz con pollo is typically cooked with saffron or a pepper like spice called annatto. Peppers and tomatoes are commonly added to the rice. One of the great things about this dish is that the recipe is very flexible. You can substitute or add ingredients to suit your taste. Would you like to include asparagus? Do you want to try a variation of the classic dish and use seafood such as shrimp or scallops instead? These and more are all possibilities.
Enchiladas are also easy to make. They consist of a corn tortilla that can be filled with various combinations of seafood, meat, potatoes, vegetables, beans, and cheese. As with the ingredients inside the tortilla itself, you can be flexible with the items used as garnish. These may include cilantro, sour cream, salsa, chili peppers, olives, lettuce, chopped onions, and more.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you may want to consider making ceviche, which is a cold dish typically served raw. Rather than cooking, the seafood in the meal (usually shrimp, squid, shark, tilapia, or tuna) marinates with with lemon or lime juice, chopped onions, and chili peppers. It can be accompanied by plantains, avocado, or sweet potato.
Other well known Hispanic foods you could make include empanadas, quesadillas, tacos, chiles rellenos, and flan. More specifically, flan is a subtly sweet dessert custard dish made with eggs. It could be just the thing to serve guests after a satisfying dinner. You can find multiple recipes that will show you how to make flan (or “como hacer flan” in Spanish).
